Ms. Helen Lane Restores Historic Brooklyn Home for Delores Barr Weaver Policy Center
JACKSONVILLE, FL – July 9, 2015 When Ms. Helen Lane learned that the Delores Barr Weaver Policy Center was looking for a space where girls and young women could gather for meetings, therapy and enrichment activities, she called Dr. Lawanda Ravoira, President and CEO of the Policy Center to offer use of what has affectionately been called, “The Pink House”.
“This beautifully restored home is the perfect space for our members of Girls’ Leadership Council to gather, share stories and connect with each other and where families can receive counseling in a welcoming, lovely environment,” said Dr. Lawanda Ravoira, President and CEO of the Policy Center.
Recently, Ms. Lane met with members of Girls’ Leadership Council there for the first time. The girls sat in a circle as they asked questions and shared their dreams for the future. The power of Ms. Lane’s gift was evident in the spontaneous assertion of one girl, “When we grow up, we will come back here and have family reunions – because this is like home to us.” All the girls nodded in agreement.
The mission of the Delores Barr Weaver Policy Center to engage communities, organizations and individuals through quality research, community organizing, advocacy, training and model programming to advance the rights of all girls, especially those in or at risk of entering the juvenile justice and child protection systems. The core practice of the Policy Center is to “see the girl” as Maria, a thirteen year old girl who was incarcerated challenged us to do, “See me for who I am and who I can become.” These joyful, playful, shy, thoughtful, spirited, brave and determined young women are well on their way to becoming remarkable adults. Girls’ Leadership Council embodies the core values and exemplifies the mission of the Policy Center.
The Policy Center was established through a grant from the Delores Barr Weaver Fund at The Community Foundation of Northeast Florida. Mrs. Weaver is a lifelong advocate for girls and young women. The Policy Center’s mission is to engage communities, organizations and individuals through quality research, community organizing, advocacy, training and model programming to advance the rights of girls and young women, especially those in the justice and child protection systems.
