I am a firm believer in the power of choice. When we strive to live life on purpose and serve others with compassion, the journey of life itself becomes a powerful experience. My introduction to the work of the Delores Barr Weaver Policy Center happened as a result of one choice. I was afforded the opportunity to attend a workshop hosted by the Policy Center with a focus on “connection.” Attending this workshop was more than an educational experience. It was therapeutic, invigorating, and powerful and resulted in connections I never imagined and will never forget.
The Girl Matters® program has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. From the advocacy trip to Tallahassee to the weekly meetings with girls, the experience has exceeded my expectations. Not only am I afforded the guidance and expertise from women with a contagious passion for service, but I am also privileged to work with girls who sharpen and challenge me in ways crucial to my development as a clinician. Each lesson is crafted with the purpose of equipping and encouraging girls to tap into her power and celebrate their individuality. We look beyond the exterior. We see the potential! We empower the girl! We see the girl! Consequently, I see girls discovering their super power and learning to use their voices.
In the garden of life, our cultural climate makes cultivating girl power essential. The Policy Center trains gardeners to cultivate girls’ power in the enriched soil of girl-centered practices. Every Girl Matters® participant receives constant reminders about the power of choice as a springboard to opportunity. One opportunity can alter the course of your life, giving it meaning, definition, and direction. My decision to attend a two-day workshop hosted by the Policy Center was instrumental in setting the course for the ultimate internship opportunity. I can say I am well on my way to becoming a master gardener as a result of my placement with the Policy Center. Each of my interactions with girls is significant. I am empowered. My hope is that my time and work with girls in the program renders even the smallest impact on the lives I’ve been privileged to serve. This has been my internship experience, and I am forever changed and grateful for the opportunity.
